Ultrasonic flowmeters measure fluid flow without installing a measuring element in the fluid. Therefore, they do not alter the fluid's flow state or create additional resistance. Ultrasonic flowmeters, however, avoid these drawbacks.
Because ultrasonic flowmeters can be installed outside the pipe for non-contact flow measurement, their cost is largely independent of the pipe diameter. Unlike other types of flowmeters, which experience significant cost increases with increasing pipe diameter, larger-diameter ultrasonic flowmeters offer superior cost-performance compared to other types of flowmeters with equivalent functionality.
Furthermore, ultrasonic flowmeters offer flow measurement accuracy that is virtually unaffected by parameters such as the measured fluid's temperature, pressure, viscosity, and density. They can also be manufactured as non-contact, portable instruments, addressing the challenges of measuring highly corrosive, non-conductive, radioactive, and flammable and explosive media, which are difficult for other types of instruments to measure. Furthermore, due to their non-contact nature, a single instrument can accommodate various pipe diameters and flow ranges. This adaptability is unmatched by other instruments.
